My eyebrow tattoo experience

Hats off to all my fellow millenials out there who spent most of their teenage years over plucking eyebrows within an inch of their life. It was the done thing, so many of us did it and now live to regret the aftermath 10 years later while feeling bushy in all the wrong places when it comes to the eyebrow department. Hells yeah I can grow little caterpillar brows! They grow down the way, and out the way, and slap bang in the middle... but never enough to merit a good, long shape. Just an interrupted monobrow of sorts. Alas, earlier this year I finally bit the bullet and decided to invest in a tattooed pair of brows. I say invest, because the money I would spend getting them tinted and waxed and buying products to fill them in would probably equate to the same amount of money over the same amount of time. However, I know it's a slightly bigger commitment than your average HD brow appointment, which is why I thought I'd share my experience so far.

Before brow tattooing

A baby faced 20 year old Ayden with the 'real' brows I have lived with for years, and shakily pencilled over for the past 4 or so!

Getting my eyebrows done was very different from any sort of tattoo I've had before. Firstly, it was on my face! (gulp) A very prominent and fear inducing place, even for someone heavily tattooed like me, especially if you end up in the hands of the wrong artist or just don't like the outcome of your brows in general. And secondly they are semi permanent, so last between 9 and 18 months and will fade gradually. So they're essentially classed as permanent makeup, but are a semi permanent tattoo! I paid £225 to get my brows tattooed by the fantastic Louise at Moya Wren's studio, and I think the price goes up even more (with over a years waiting list) if you go with Moya herself. I've followed her work for years and it really is phenomenal! So anyone trained by Moya has the golden seal of approval in my eyes.

Tattooed eyebrows before & after

Your eyebrows are completed across two appointments. On my first visit Louise had a long chat with me about my brows (and brow history) and mapped out my ideal shape and colour. I was numbed up with some cream and then she went to work on my brows. The picture above is the before and after of the first appointment. As you can see they are quite dark and liney, but this fades to about 50% with the first sitting which is why you go back for a second one. I had my first appointment before I went to Singapore, and by the time I got back it was time for my second one and they had faded considerably just as Louise had said they would.

Not to fear though! This is totally normal and why your brows are completed with a 2nd appointment. It also means you have the chance to slightly adjust the shape or colour. Louise did more powder work on this second visit, which is essentially shading rather than just all lines. Those initial hair strokes are so important though, as your own eyebrow hair isn't removed but simply added to, so the delicate hair strokes do give them a more realistic effect. Pain wise, it was really just a slight scratching feeling as if you had a lil' itch on your face, and definitely nothing at all like getting an actual tattoo! Louise made me feel completely relax and at one point I felt like I could have fallen asleep. You're not meant to get them wet for the first week as this can cause pigment loss, so that was a wee bit of a challenge when it came to washing my hair and cleansing my face, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. Just like a normal tattoo, they start to scab and flake as they heal but only very lightly. They were HELLA itchy though! I found that wiggling my brows up and down in a suggestive manner helped to satisfy that itch (maaaaaybe don't do that in public though...)

Tattooed eyebrows

I'm super happy with how my brows turned out, and I'll definitely go back to Moya's for my annual touch up. The first and last pictures in this post are my brows a couple of days ago with absolutely no makeup on them whatsoever. This is how I wear them most days with just a wee bit of makeup on the rest of my face for work, but if I was getting glammed up or putting a proper full face of makeup on then I do pencil them in a bit so that they're darker. Which is exactly what I did after taking those pictures. So even though I've not went completely makeup free when it comes to my brows, I have a much stronger (and pretty damn permanent) base, which makes pencilling over the top of them so easy with that existing template, rather than a daily guessing game of how thick or what shape are my caterpillars gonna be today! When it comes to hair removal I'm a much more effective plucker now, cause basically if it's outside the brow tattoo area then I can confidently say buh bye! What do you think about permanent makeup, is it something you would consider or is it just not for you? Feel free to drop me a tweet or message with any questions, and always make sure to do your research if you're looking for a (fully qualified and experienced) SPMU artist to do any procedure like this.
